A lot of companies are actually benefitting now from
direct mail marketing services. This might come as a surprise for someone who grew up in the 70s, 80s, and 90s. Back then,
direct mail advertising materials were thought of as "junk mail". Consumers, so numbed by the influx of these mailed ads, didn’t even bother to open them anymore. Sealed envelopes were thrown to the trash, raising the concern of business owners and environmentalists alike.
With the popularity of the Internet, though, and with most consumers opting to just email their ads, direct mail advertising is seen in a different light. Most consumers now feel that snail mailed messages from companies are "more intimate" ways to communicate. There’s a higher possibility now of mailed ads to be opened. Of course, this would still depend on the approach of the company. How can you actually do well in this marketing strategy?
Produce great material
If you want to get the attention of your target consumers though direct mail marketing, you better come up with great material. Create copies which are short and sweet but which would sell your products or services effectively. Verbosity is not a good thing in advertising. Consumers get bored when you go around the subject. Be direct but be enticing. Draw them in by using lines which would tap into their curiosity. At the end of your copy, though, you need to have a clear call-to-action so your consumers know what it is you really want them to do.
Offers are also more attractive when they’re risk-free. Freebies, limited offers and the like make things easier for your consumer. You might also want to add a lot of payment/purchase options. Those who accept credit card purchases do well in direct mail marketing.
Know when to outsource
No matter how small your company is, it’s impossible for you to do everything on your own. Know what to outsource. There are plenty of companies out there offering direct mail marketing services. Take full advantage of them, compare rates and feedbacks from current clients, and know who to entrust with your money.
Usually, packaging and research work are left in the hands of professionals. It would be good to outsource these tasks because they also take a lot of time and money. You can attempt to do copies and graphic work on your own, but do so only if you’re trained and skilled enough. If you think trying to be self-sufficient would just put your business at risk, outsource these tasks too.
